<image:title>News - Positive Parenting: Building Stronger Relationships and Healthier Development - Equally important is communication. Positive parenting involves listening to your child and engaging in conversation rather than defaulting to scolding. This helps children understand why a behavior is right or wrong and allows mistakes to become learning opportunities. For instance, instead of reacting with “Why did you do that?” a parent might say, “Let’s talk about what happened and how we can make it right.” This approach promotes understanding and accountability, making it more likely that the child will make better choices in the future.</image:title>
<image:caption>Importantly, positive parenting does not mean a lack of structure or discipline. Clear boundaries are essential. The difference lies in how those boundaries are enforced. Rather than relying on yelling, spanking, or humiliation, which can cause fear or resentment, positive parenting uses logical and natural consequences to teach responsibility. For example, if a child misuses their phone, a parent might calmly explain the issue and temporarily remove the privilege. This consequence is directly tied to the behavior and reinforces learning, rather than simply causing distress. The focus remains on growth, not punishment.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Education Advocacy Workshops That Empower Students and Families - At Children’s Law Center, we believe informed families are empowered families. Our Education Advocacy Program (EAP) workshops are designed to help students, caregivers, and community members confidently advocate for themselves in the education system. When families understand their educational rights and available supports, they are better positioned to ensure children receive the services they need to succeed in school and beyond.</image:title>
<image:caption>Why Education Advocacy Matters Navigating school systems can feel overwhelming, especially for families facing conflict situations and discipline issues, learning differences, or limited access to resources. Our education advocacy workshops provide clear, practical guidance that de-mystifies the process and builds confidence.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Education Advocacy Workshops That Empower Students and Families - Beyond sharing information, our workshops create space for families to ask questions, share experiences, and practice advocacy skills. Self-advocacy in education is a powerful tool, one that can change the trajectory of a child’s academic journey. When families understand how to, speak up in school meetings, request appropriate services, and collaborate effectively with educators, students are more likely to receive the support they need to thrive.</image:title>
<image:caption>Children’s Law Center will continue offering ongoing EAP workshops throughout the year in partnership with community organizations. Our goal is simple but powerful: increase access, build knowledge, and empower families to advocate effectively for their children. When families have the tools to navigate the education system with confidence, the benefits ripple outward—strengthening students, supporting families, and building healthier communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - What Happens When a Child Gets a Voice in Court? Inside CLC’s Custody Advocacy Program - The Custody Advocacy Program (CAP) is one of the most important child-focused presences in the courtroom. At Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina (CLC), CAP ensures that outcomes in domestic violence and high-conflict custody cases center on what matters most: the best interests of the child.</image:title>
<image:caption>Through CAP, CLC attorneys are appointed by District Court Judges to serve as Guardians ad Litem (GALs) in qualifying cases in Forsyth and Guilford counties. In this role, the GAL provides the court with an independent, child-focused assessment of the family’s circumstances. Because CAP attorneys do not represent either parent, their advocacy remains focused solely on the child’s safety, stability, and well-being. Rather than taking sides, the GAL conducts a thorough investigation and presents findings and recommendations to the judge, who makes the final decisions in the case.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Beyond the Case: Helping Parents Build Safe, Stable Homes - One of the Children’s Law Center’s core goals is to do more than resolve legal issues, we work to strengthen family relationships so children can thrive. For a developing child, a stable, caring family is one of the strongest predictors of good mental health. The National Institutes of Health notes that “relational health” — a child’s sense of connectedness with caregivers — strongly influences social and emotional outcomes. By contrast, persistent household conflict increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems, which can affect school performance, peer relationships, and long-term wellbeing.</image:title>
<image:caption>At CLC, we want every child leaving our care to return to a safe, supportive environment that promotes healthy development. To help families build and maintain those environments, we’ve launched a new Parenting Resources page on our website. The page offers practical, easy-to-use guidance on strengthening family relationships, improving communication, and navigating challenges such as custody arrangements, co-parenting, and family conflict. You’ll find articles and stratigies for parents and caregivers, links to counseling and mental-health resources, referrals to community support programs, and trusted legal information to help families understand next steps after a case is resolved. The three focus areas are: The Parent-Child Relationship The Parenting Partnership Navigating Custody and Conflict We designed the page to be accessible and actionable, so parents and caregivers can quickly find tools relevant to their situation and connect with more specialized support when needed. Whether you’re seeking strategies for calming conflict, resources for children’s emotional health, or guidance on co-parenting agreements, the Parenting Resources page brings those options together in one place. <image:title>News - A New Year, A Stronger Voice for Children - As we step into a new year, it’s a natural moment to reflect - on where we’ve been, what we’ve learned, and the work that still lies ahead. For Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina, that reflection always brings us back to the children we serve and the role our Custody Advocacy Program (CAP) plays in helping them find safety, stability, and a path forward.</image:title>
<image:caption>Every year, CAP serves children caught in the middle of domestic violence protective order cases and high-conflict custody disputes. These are moments of profound uncertainty for a child, when decisions made in a courtroom can shape their sense of security, and their emotional well-being for years to come. CAP exists to ensure that, in those moments, the child’s voice is not lost.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>News - A New Year, A Stronger Voice for Children - Through CAP, trained child advocates step in to represent a child’s best interests. Advocates spend time getting to know the child, listening to their experiences, and understanding the realities of their family situation. They work closely with caregivers, courts, and community partners to provide judges with the information needed to make informed, child-centered decisions. This advocacy helps the court move beyond competing adult narratives and focus on what truly supports the child’s safety and stability.</image:title>
<image:caption>The impact of CAP extends well beyond individual cases. When children are placed in safer, more stable custody arrangements, the ripple effects are felt throughout the community. Families experience reduced conflict, courts benefit from clearer information, and children are better positioned to heal, learn, and grow. Over time, early and thoughtful intervention helps reduce repeated court involvement and prevents crises from escalating; strengthening not just families, but the systems that serve them and the community as a whole.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are grateful for the children. They are the reason we do this work, and they are the ones who inspire us daily. Their courage in the face of conflict, their resilience in moments of upheaval, and their hope for what their futures can look like remind us why advocacy matters. They show us that even in difficult circumstances, growth and healing are possible. They encourage us to do better, reach further, and speak louder.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Iris Sunshine, Executive Director of CLC and member of the Legal Support Center Advisory Board, noted the importance of this new service, “This resource is open to the entire community and provides free guidance to individuals navigating a complex and often confusing civil legal system. For many in our community who cannot afford to retain an attorney, the Center offers space, technology, forms, and reference materials to help them represent themselves and seek justice.” For years, CLC has seen firsthand how difficult it can be for families to navigate the courts, particularly in custody and domestic violence cases. Sunshine and the rest of the CLC team worked alongside local partners to create a resource that would make the legal system more accessible and equitable.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Partnering for Justice: CLC and Elon Law’s Residency Program - At Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina (CLC), we believe in the power of mentorship, education, and hands-on experience to shape the next generation of legal advocates. That is why we are proud to be a longtime partner of Elon University School of Law and their groundbreaking Residency-in-Practice Program.</image:title>
<image:caption>Since the early days of the program, CLC has welcomed Elon Law students into our offices to provide an immersive residency experience. More than just an internship, Elon’s Residency Program is thoughtfully designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world legal practice. Each student is paired with an experienced attorney who serves not only as a guardian ad litem supervisor, but as a professor, mentor, and role model. Through this partnership, law students have gained critical insight into what it truly means to be an advocate; especially in the unique and impactful space of child-focused legal work. During their residency, CLC interns sharpen their legal writing and research skills, navigate complex family and education law cases, and witness the profound responsibility GAL attorneys carry in advocating for vulnerable children in the community and the courtroom. At the same time, the Residency Program brings tremendous value to CLC. The energy, dedication, and fresh perspectives that Elon Law students bring to our team help expand our capacity to serve and strengthen our mission to protect children’s rights across Forsyth and Guilford counties. These students become part of our core work processes. Our CLC residents have engaged in supporting attorneys and clients need to complete research memorandums and assisting in case strategies; these real-world experiences all contribute to effective legal solutions that make a long-term difference in children’s lives.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Recognizing the Signs: When a Student May Need More Support in School - At Children’s Law Center, we work every day to ensure children can succeed in school and in life. But sometimes, no matter how hard a child tries or how supportive their family is, something still seems off. Maybe they’re falling behind, acting out, or avoiding school altogether. And as a parent, guardian, or caregiver, that lingering feeling that your child may need more support should never be ignored. It can be hard to know what to look for or when to take that next step. The signs aren’t always obvious. They might show up as late-night tears over homework that never gets finished, constant calls from the school about behavior, or quiet struggles that only a teacher or counselor might catch during the day. One common red flag is persistent academic difficulty. If a student continues to fall behind even after getting extra help at home, whether that’s reading support, tutoring, or increased structure, it could signal a learning difference that hasn’t yet been identified. Dyslexia, ADHD, or processing disorders often hide behind poor grades or a lack of engagement. Teachers may describe your child as bright but say they’re not "applying themselves" when the truth is, they may be trying their hardest and still not breaking through. Other children may be physically present in the classroom but mentally somewhere else. Struggling to stay focused, bouncing from one thought to the next, or being unable to sit still might seem like “typical kid behavior” at first. But when it begins to interfere with learning or when the child starts to feel ashamed or isolated because of it, that’s worth paying attention to. Sometimes attention issues stem from ADHD or executive functioning challenges. Without support, children can feel like they’re failing at something they don’t even understand. There are emotional signs, too. Maybe your child used to enjoy school and now dreads it. Maybe there are growing signs of anxiety, frustration, or even depression tied to academic or social stress. Maybe they’ve started having frequent outbursts or retreating inward. It’s not uncommon for children with undiagnosed learning or developmental needs to internalize feelings of failure, or to act out when they don’t feel heard. These emotional responses are often a cry for help, not a sign of disobedience. Behavioral referrals, especially when they become frequent, can also be a sign that a child isn’t receiving the support they need. A child who is disciplined repeatedly without improvement may not need punishment, they may need intervention, understanding, and accommodation that fit their needs. We see this especially in students who are misunderstood, mischaracterized, or whose behaviors are a direct result of unmet needs.</image:title>
<image:caption>So where can you go from here? Families often don’t know they can ask for help. You have the right to request a formal evaluation to determine if a child qualifies for accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Both can make a world of difference. An IEP provides tailored goals, specialized instruction, and classroom support for students with eligible disabilities. A 504 Plan, while less intensive, ensures students still receive necessary accommodations to access learning in the general classroom. Both tools are legal protection and both begin with a conversation followed by a written request from your school. The process can feel overwhelming. You might worry you’re overreacting, or that advocating too loudly will make things harder for your child. But you’re not alone. Your instincts are often right, and nobody knows your child better than you, the parent. If you suspect something deeper is going on, trust that. Keep written records, reach out to teachers, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. At Children’s Law Center, we’re here to help families navigate these systems. Every child deserves an education that fits who they are. And every family deserves to know their rights and options and feel empowered to make positive change happen.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Honoring a Legacy of Service: Children's Law Center Names Director Role in Tribute to Judge William Graham, Jr. - Pictured (left): Paige Gilliard, Ashton Graham, Cinny Strickland Graham, Iris Sunshine</image:title>
<image:caption>Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina (CLC) is proud to announce the naming of a key leadership position in honor of a man whose commitment to justice and children has left a lasting impact: the late Judge William Thomas Graham, Jr. In recognition of Judge Graham’s decades of partnership with CLC’s Custody Advocacy Program, both during his time on the bench and through his ongoing support, we are honored to share that the Director’s position of the Custody Advocacy Program will now bear his name. Going forward, the role will be known as the William Graham, Jr. Director, Custody Advocacy Program. Judge Graham served as a Forsyth County District Court Judge for over 20 years from 1996 to 2016. As CLC’s Executive Director Iris Sunshine reflected during a recent celebration of the announcement, “Judge Graham recognized the necessity for an impartial advocate for the best interests of children in the domestic violence and high-conflict custody cases which came before him. He valued and trusted Children’s Law Center’s unbiased, independent, and thorough work”. This announcement was made at a special gathering of community leaders, partners, and supporters. The evening featured remarks from Iris Sunshine; Paige Gilliard, the first William Graham, Jr. Director, Custody Advocacy program; and Cinny Graham, our Guest of Honor, Judge Graham’s wife, and a long-time supporter of CLC’s mission. We were also excited to have Ashton Graham, Judge Graham’s sister, in attendance, who was in from out of town. Beyond the courtroom, Judge Graham was fondly remembered for his warmth, curiosity, and deep love for Cinny. Iris shared how he often spoke of their travels together and his genuine interest in others' lives, a reflection of his kind spirit and personal integrity. As Cinny Graham shared, “William saw first-hand the impact of CLC’s work, and was certain that with their diligence and partnership, he would be able to uphold what was in the best interests of children facing really challenging circumstances. He had a great respect for what they do, as well as the people involved, and trusted their guidance.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News - How Custody Arrangements Shape A Child’s Mental Health</image:title>
<image:caption>Imagine being eight years old and hearing your parents say they’re getting a divorce. You don’t fully understand what’s happening, but you know everything is about to change. Where will you live? Will you still see both parents? These questions matter—a lot. Research shows that how custody is handled can have a lasting impact on a child’s mental health. Regarding custody, we are speaking about two types: - legal custody, which determines who makes decisions about a child’s upbringing (education, healthcare, etc.). - physical custody, which determines where the child lives. When we refer to joint custody in this article, we’re specifically discussing joint physical custody, where children spend substantial time living with both parents. Likewise, sole custody here refers to sole physical custody, where the child primarily resides with one parent, even if both parents share legal custody.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Supporting Your Child’s Education During School Breaks: Tips for Parents - When school is out for summer vacation, spring break, or other extended periods, many parents wonder how to keep their children engaged, learning, and supported outside of the classroom. This can be a crucial time for students with disabilities, those managing mental or physical health needs, and in need of added support structure.</image:title>
<image:caption>Maintaining a routine during school breaks is essential for children to feel secure and balanced. Establishing a daily schedule with set times for waking up, meals, and activities can help provide structure, especially for children who thrive on consistency. Predictability can ease the transition back into school life once the break is over.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - CLC New Staff Member Spotlight – Jasmine Gregory - Children’s Law Center welcomes our newest staff member- Custody Advocacy Attorney Jasmine H. Gregory!</image:title>
<image:caption>Following her first year of law school, Gregory joined the CLC during the summer of 2016 as an intern in the Custody Advocacy Program. When asked about the decision to leave her own private family law practice to return to CLC as a staff member, Gregory indicated that it came down to serving children rather than parents, “Having represented parents for more than 6 years, my passions shifted, and it became more important to me to be an advocate for children and their needs to grow up to be stable adults”. Regarding the challenges that come with working through custody, Gregory acknowledges that it is a difficult situation for all involved. “High conflict custody and domestic violence are difficult subjects, no matter who you are, but in this job, I also get to remind the adults that despite their challenges, the children and their success need to be the center of their priorities,” said Gregory. Gregory looks forward to contributing to CLC’s success with her return in our 20th anniversary year. “Having operated my own boutique family law firm for more than three years, I am confident I can contribute to our mission and bring some new ideas to help move our organization forward.” CLC is beyond thankful to have Jasmine on our team! Some quick fun facts about her are that she is a classically trained ballerina and is ambidextrous.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Education Advocacy Program steps in to make an impact</image:title>
<image:caption>When Ciara’s father contacted EAP, Ciara was at risk of being retained in the 2nd grade and was struggling to focus at school. Although Ciara had not been formally diagnosed with ADHD, there were communication issues between the school system, her doctor, and her father that were affecting the process. School administrators informed Ciara’s father that a medical diagnosis was required for her to be eligible for an IEP. Meanwhile, the doctor was unable to give Ciara an ADHD diagnosis due to insufficient information. EAP intervened to support the family in navigating the IEP process and to help bridge the communication gap between the school and the doctor’s office. EAP reached out to Ciara’s doctor, who provided a Vanderbilt Assessment Scale—a tool used for diagnosing ADHD—to the school. This allowed Ciara’s teachers to fill it out and help determine whether Ciara met the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Simultaneously, the school district agreed to evaluate Ciara for an IEP under a different eligibility category, as requested by EAP.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Charitable Ways To Give this Holiday Season</image:title>
<image:caption>Supporting the Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina is more than just a financial contribution—it's a commitment to ensuring that every child in our community has access to the legal services they need to thrive. As we work to provide critical advocacy and representation for children in the Triad, we invite you to explore the many ways you can make a lasting impact. Whether through one-time donations, monthly giving, or other creative avenues, every contribution plays a vital role in advancing our mission and helping children navigate their legal challenges. In this article, we’ll guide you through the various ways you can give and be part of a transformative force for the children we serve. 1.) Cash Donation – CLC accepts cash donations online as well as by cash, check or credit card. Please go to the Donation Page and follow the steps to either donate online or mail in a donation. Recurring donation are a great way to make an impact on the organization on an ongoing basis. 2.) Gift Matching – Employers often match charitable donations of their employees. If you know your employer does have a donation patching program or if you are not sure, you can check with your company’s Human Resources Contact to find out – or ask us to do so for you. 3.) Stock Donations & IRA Distributions – Securities may be donated to charitable organizations by obtaining the nonprofit’s account information and filling out the appropriate stock donation paperwork to be sent to your brokerage. Examples of securities donations include mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs), bonds, and stocks. Individuals who are 70½ years old or older may donate up to $100,000 total directly from their IRA to a charitable organization. Please consult a tax advisor for additional information. For more information on Securities Donations and IRA Distributions, please contact Ben Loebner, CLC’s Fund Development Manager at bloebner@childlawnc.org. 4.) Legacy & Planned gifts – One of the most meaningful ways you can support the Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina is by making a legacy or planned gift. These gifts provide a lasting impact on our mission and ensure that future generations of children continue to receive the vital legal services they deserve. Whether through a bequest in your will, a charitable trust, or other planned giving options, your gift can help us strengthen our programs for years to come. By choosing to leave a legacy, you become a cornerstone of our long-term success, creating a brighter future for children in need. Consider making a lasting difference today by including the Children’s Law Center in your estate plans.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On October 15th, Children's Law Center Custody Advocacy Program Director, Paige Gilliard, and CLC Board Member, Marcus Shields, were sworn in to the United States Supreme Court Bar. Paige and Marcus were accompanied by four other attorneys from the Greensboro Bar Association and Superior Court Judge Patrice Hinnant (ret.). Paige’s father served as her movant during the ceremony and petitioned the court to swear her in. A really great moment for both Paige and her father. All justices were in attendance. Following the ceremony, the attorneys had the opportunity to observe two oral arguments at the Supreme Court, an exciting opportunity for these legal professionals to observe the highest court in the land at work. Reflecting on the experience, Paige considers it a highlight of her professional career as well as an incredible personal experience. CLC is extremely proud of Paige for this incredible achievement and her tenacious advocacy for children. <image:title>News - Celebrations at Speak Up for Children 2024 presented by Kilpatrick</image:title>
<image:caption>Forsyth Country Club was abuzz with energy as Children's Law Center (CLC) hosted our annual Speak Up for Children (SUFC) event on October 10th. The venue was filled, a testament to the community's unwavering commitment to the children of the triad and elevating their voices in the courtroom and beyond. The atmosphere was electric, brimming with warmth and enthusiasm. Attendees shared stories and connected with each other, united by a common purpose and a passion for making a difference in the lives of children in Forsyth and Guilford counties. The program began with Iris Sunshine, Executive Director of CLC, introducing long term champions for CLC and SUFC 2024 Honorary Chairs Nancy and Rich Keshian. The Keshians both reinforced their steadfast support for the organization and addressed the strong need for our services in the community. Their words set a powerful tone for the evening, reminding everyone why their presence and contributions mattered so deeply. Mr. Keshian, having served as a CLC volunteer attorney for many years also provided insight into the lives of our children like only someone who has seen the needs firsthand can. We are incredibly grateful to have the Keshians as a part of the dedicated CLC team. Following our Honorary Chairs, Talitha Vickers, Master of Ceremonies for the evening and Marketing and Business Development Manager at Presenting Sponsor Kilpatrick, took the stage. She shared heartfelt stories, highlighted the decades of work CLC has been doing in the Triad, including having served more than 1,700 children in need. Her words shed light on the real-life challenges children face and how collective efforts can lead to meaningful change. The program concluded with a dynamic call to action led by event committee member and champion for children Indira Roberts. With contagious enthusiasm, she initiated a paddle raise that invigorated the entire room. Hands shot up eagerly as guests pledged their support, each commitment symbolizing hope and a brighter future for children in need. Adding to the excitement, attendees participated in a silent auction featuring fabulous donations from both local businesses and corporate supporters. The auction offered an array of enticing items and experiences, encouraging friendly competition and further contributions to the cause. It was yet another way the community came together, showcasing generosity and a shared desire to make a positive impact. At the event's closing moments, everyone in attendance felt a wave of joy and pride upon learning this year's Speak Up for Children raised more funds than ever before. The room erupted in applause and cheers, celebrating a record-breaking achievement made possible by the dedication and generosity of everyone involved. CLC extends its deepest gratitude to all who attended, donated, and participated in the online auction and raffle. This support not only helps to elevate the voices of children but also empowers the CLC team to continue its vital legal advocacy in the community. The success of the event is a testament to what can be achieved when we stand together with compassion and purpose. We would also like to thank the Speak Up for Children event committee for their tireless work throughout the year as well as presenting sponsor Kilpatrick and all our event sponsors for making this event possible. Reflecting on this extraordinary gathering, it's clear that when we unite to speak up for children, we not only transform their lives but also strengthen the bonds within our community. The 2024 Speak Up for Children event was more than just a fundraiser—it was a celebration of hope, unity, and the power of coming together to create lasting change.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - First-Ever Back to School Bonanza: A Community Celebration</image:title>
<image:caption>On Saturday, Children’s Law Center (CLC) joined community partners in Liberty Plaza, downtown Winston-Salem, for the Back to School Bonanza. This event united families with children focused local resources. It was about supporting families, fostering connections, and building community. The Bonanza was the vision of Leah Powell, Legal Assistant for CLC’s Education Advocacy Program (EAP), who worked alongside Hayley Lampkin-Blyth, EAP Director, and the rest of the team at CLC, to bring it to life. The event had two key goals: to provide a fun and engaging event for children and families; and to give families needed school supplies they might otherwise not have access to. The Bonanza offered a variety of fun activities for families to enjoy. Lawn games, arts and crafts, and live music from a local DJ created a festive and welcoming atmosphere. Local businesses, Cam’s Coffee Co. and Dream Kreams, were on hand serving up coffee and ice cream that kept both children and adults energized through the afternoon. Every child that visited each of the event’s community resource groups was gifted a backpack filled with brand-new school supplies—aimed to lighten the load for families preparing their children early in the school year.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - First-Ever Back to School Bonanza: A Community Celebration - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>At its heart, the Back to School Bonanza was about ensuring that families feel seen and supported as they prepare for the school year. For the children who left with backpacks full of supplies and smiles on their faces, and for the parents who received valuable information from local organizations, the day was a resounding success. The impact of this event reflects the collective effort of Powell, CLC, and the many local organizations that come together to support children throughout the year.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Camp HOPE Expands in its 8th Year in North Carolina</image:title>
<image:caption>Camp HOPE North Carolina - Guilford County, run through the Guilford County Family Justice Center (FJC) is dedicated to children and teens who have experienced trauma and domestic violence. In its 8th year, the camp is celebrating its largest group of children yet. Hosted by the Family Justice Center in collaboration with YMCA Camp Weaver, this year’s camp welcomes 85 campers, supported by 18 volunteer mentors and 13 additional support staff. The FJC’s Child Trauma Specialist Coordinator Hannah Mould details the growth and new aspects of this year’s camp, emphasizing its positive impact on the community, “...new this year, High Adventure campers aged 13-15 will have more advanced, challenge-by-choice activities including a field trip to the whitewater center and late-night bonfire,” said Mould. Therapeutic activities remain a cornerstone of Camp HOPE’s offerings. This year, the camp introduces a special therapeutic horseback riding activity, facilitated by Horsepower Therapeutic Learning Center. This activity is designed to promote healing and build trust through interaction with horses, offering a unique and calming therapeutic experience. These sessions align with Camp HOPE’s mission of providing trauma-informed care in a nurturing setting. A significant highlight this year is the involvement of former campers who have transitioned into mentor roles. For the first time, three camp counselor volunteers, who were once campers themselves, are now giving back to the community that supported them. Having attended the camp for over six years, their journey from campers to counselors underscores the camp’s lasting impact and the powerful sense of community it fosters. These counselors bring a deep understanding and empathy to their roles, serving as inspirational figures for current campers. We celebrate Custody Advocacy Program Director, Paige Gilliard, also known as “Fanny Pack”, who has been a counselor at Camp HOPE since its inception. Her unwavering dedication and hard work have been instrumental in the camp’s success. Thank you Paige, we appreciate all that you have done to support and grow Camp HOPE over the years. Your commitment has helped shape the program into the transformative experience it is today. As Camp HOPE continues to evolve, its commitment to providing a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for children remains steadfast. The camp’s success reflects the dedication of its staff and volunteers, as well as the resilience and courage of its campers. This year’s record participation and new activities are a testament to the program’s enduring impact and the positive change it inspires in the lives of young people.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - The First Year of Education Advocacy at Children's Law Center - “We saw a large increase in our cases in March; we have seen an influx as word has spread through the community.” says Program Director, Hayley Lampkin Blyth. Between July 1st, 2023, and June 30th, 2024, EAP engaged with 108 community members through our community workshops, as well as 44 students through our direct representation. She expands by sharing, “2023-24 was about building the foundation and infrastructure of our program. We are looking forward to next year using what we have developed and what we have learned to propel us to help us create more successful outcomes for students and families.”</image:title>
<image:caption>Throughout the school year, our team has encountered and navigated numerous challenges, gaining a deeper understanding of the unique educational needs of the children in our community. We’ve fostered stronger partnerships with the school system as well as other community-based organizations. EAP Legal Assistant Leah Powell shares, “We have made a lot of progress in developing partnerships with child serving entities. Now, we feel like the students and families that need us can find us. While I feel like we have made an impact there is still so much that we can and want to do,” says Powell. Reverend Paul R. Ford, Senior Consultant, Facilitator for My Brother’s Keeper Winston-Salem, and Policy Coordinator at Action 4 Equity sees our Education Advocacy Program as “work that is beginning to speak to a void that has been present in our community for a long time.” Looking ahead, the Children’s Law Center is committed to advancing our Education Advocacy Program by integrating the insights gained over the past year. “My hope is we can work on getting connected to families earlier, before there are major conflicts or large barriers, to help them with early intervention,” shares Powell, reflecting on the future evolution of EAP. Furthermore, CLC aims to strengthen our collaboration with community partners, creating a more comprehensive support network for the children and families we serve. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, we are determined to amplify our impact and ensure that every child has access to a quality education. Reverend Ford speaks to the broader systemic impact that our education advocacy work can have in the community, “If we want to shrink the achievement gap in our schools, these supports are critical and need to be targeted… that is how we can one day get to the point where every student that needs an IEP has one, where all students with IEPs are getting the additional supports they need, and where all families and parents are working in partnership with the schools for the benefit of their children. Once we have that, we will see that the achievement gap will shrink on its own.” EAP, along with our community partners and the school system, are working to create a supportive framework for students in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools. “We have had a positive, collaborative experience working with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools and are looking forward to building upon that relationship. We and the school system are both invested in the success of all students.” shares Lampkin Blyth. “No matter how much progress a system makes, there is always going to be a need for a check on the system. Our role of accountability is pivotal in WS/FCS’s implementation of its ideals related to school suspensions and equity.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News - NORTH CAROLINA’S LAW SCHOOLS PARTNERING WITH CLC: An Immediate Impact with an Eye to the Future - Thus far in 2024, Children’s Law Center has hosted three residents from Elon School of Law and an intern from Campbell School of Law. We also will welcome four more interns this summer – one each from Elon and the University of North Carolina School of Law as well as two from Wake Forest University School of Law. Under the guidance of seasoned attorneys, our law school talent navigates intricate cases involving high conflict custody and domestic violence. This hands-on approach cultivates not only legal acumen but also empathy and understanding—the bedrock of effective advocacy. At Children’s Law Center, the law students are not mere observers; they are integral contributors to the legal advocacy of our young clients. The transition from theory to practice can be formidable; however, these interns and residents gain real world knowledge. CLC serves as a bridge for these students to deepen their legal knowledge acquired in courses, understand the importance and value of ethical responsibilities, hone and acquire skills needed to be a successful lawyer, and make the professional connections important to career development. Moreover, they gain a deep understanding of the court system and legal processes that impact the children we advocate for, as well as the positive impact that one caring adult can have on a child. In his own words, current Elon University School of Law Resident Carson Penry describes his experience, “Working with CLC has been a wonderful opportunity to connect my educational aspirations with my passion for child welfare. The individuals I have the pleasure of working with are bright and compassionate. It has been a treat to work with and learn from them this semester.”</image:title>

<image:title>News - Celebrating a decade of service in High Point - In 2023, we once again answered the call. "In response to the need in the Guilford County and at the request of the local legal community," she explained, " We determined that we must address the needs of more children and expanded our programming to include representing the best interests of children in these high-conflict custody cases."</image:title>
<image:caption>Sunshine emphasized CLC's unwavering commitment to positively changing the trajectory of a child's life. In addition, as CLC looks towards the future, she outlines, "We are building on our growth and continuously improving our process and services." Sunshine closed her speech by reaffirming CLC's dedication to investing in the children of the community. "We want what you want, for every child in High Point to be safe, and to have a brighter future," she declared, leaving attendees inspired and hopeful for the next decade of service in High Point. The event served as a moving reminder of CLC's commitment to the well-being of children and families in the High Point community, underscoring the organization's vital role in creating a safer and brighter future for all.</image:caption>

Miller's words struck a chord as she emphasized, "Our children in Forsyth County are our most valuable resource, and we think that every child deserves to grow up with safety and love." Her call for community vigilance against abuse and neglect echoed a sobering truth—often, intervention comes too late in tragic cases.</image:caption>

Because of that experience, I am delighted to be joining the CLC board to help this organization carry on its critical work serving children in our community.” Whitney continues a strong tradition of Kilpatrick’s commitment in our community as child advocates and leaders at Children’s Law Center.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - New additions to the Board of Directors at CLC - Marcus Shields – Of Counsel, Ellis & Winters LLP</image:title>
<image:caption>Marcus worked hand-in-hand with CLC during his time on the Bench as a District Court Judge in Guilford County. He brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the judicial system, the value of our work and the needs in Guilford County. In his own words, “As a former judge I saw firsthand the impact and important difference CLC made in the families that found themselves in our courtrooms in Guilford County. I believe the work is vital to protect the voices and best interests of children. I am looking forward to building onto CLC’s momentum that will allow the organization to help more families and assist in the important work of being the voice of children who are our most vulnerable and precious gifts.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FILM AND PANEL DISCUSSION Join us at a/perture cinemas for a special free screening brought to you by Family Services in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Panel to follow the film. Single mother Sandra (Clare Dunne) escapes her abusive partner with her two young children, only to find herself trapped in temporary accommodation. After months of struggling, she draws inspiration from one of her daughter’s bedtime stories and hits upon the idea of self-building an affordable home. She finds an architect who provides her with plans and is offered land by Peggy (Harriet Walter), a woman she cleans for. Aido (Conleth Hill), a building contractor, appears willing to help, too. But as her past rears its head in the form of Gary (Ian Lloyd Anderson), her possessive ex, and as bureaucrats fight back against her independent spirit, will Sandra be able to rebuild her life from the ground up? Panelists: Iris Sunshine, Executive Director at Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina Andrea Kurtz, Executive Director, Strategic Housing Initiatives at United Way of Forsyth County Maria Harkins, Victim Advocate Case Manager, Family Services Moderator: Traci Ross, President, and CEO at Family Services Monday, Oct. 3 Doors open at 5:30 The film begins at 6:00 pm Panel discussion following the film For questions, please contact Lucia Higgins at lhiggins@familyservicesforsyth.org Get your free tickets for Herself</image:caption>

<image:title>COVID-19 - COVID-19 Statement</image:title>
<image:caption>The Children’s Law Center is operating remotely in compliance with restrictions related to the COVID-19 virus. We are carefully following the advice of the CDC, local health officials in Forsyth and Guilford Counties, the NC Court System, and the Forsyth and Guilford County Courts. If you are involved in an ongoing case, you should contact your own attorney to understand how the closures may have affected your case. Please keep the CLC GAL/ staff attorney assigned to advocate for your child(children) informed as to any changes in dates as you become aware of them and/or of any new information regarding your child (children). The National Domestic Violence Hotline remains open, with special concern for those who are quarantined with their abuser. Please call 911 if you or your child are in immediate danger.</image:caption>

<image:title>COVID-19</image:title>
<image:caption>In light of governmental health agency recommendations, we are asking that if you are feeling unwell or experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough and/or shortness of breath, please avoid meeting with CLC staff, even to deliver or pick up documents. Stay at home if you are confirmed to have COVID-19 or have a family member at home that is confirmed to have COVID-19. The safety of our child clients, their families, courthouse personnel, our staff, and the entire community are foremost in our minds at this unusual time.</image:caption>
