This summer, Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina (CLC) was fortunate to be joined by an inspiring group of high school students and recent graduates who chose to spend their summer giving back to their community. What began only a few years ago as a small, almost non-existent program has now grown into a vibrant annual tradition, one that brings together civic-minded, dedicated students eager to make a difference.
Why They Chose CLC
Each volunteer came to CLC with a different story but a shared motivation: to learn, serve, and contribute to the mission of protecting children’s rights. Some were encouraged to join by teachers, mentors, or past volunteers. Others sought meaningful opportunities themselves, determined to apply their time and energy where it could truly matter.
What They Accomplished
Over the course of the summer, our student volunteers immersed themselves in the daily work of CLC, assisting with projects that deepened their understanding of child advocacy and the legal system. They organized case files, supported program staff, and contributed to initiatives that expand access to justice for children in high-conflict custody and domestic violence cases.
More than just clerical help, these students brought fresh perspectives, energy, and curiosity that made them an invaluable part of our team. One volunteer reflected on how much they learned about the process of child advocacy, while another spoke about the pride they felt in finishing major projects alongside peers. Several noted how eye-opening it was to see the legal system through the lens of children who rely on CLC for protection and stability.
Looking Ahead
As their summers at CLC wrapped up, our volunteers shared what they were most excited for in the future: starting a new school year, growing their own nonprofit ventures, leading their school service organizations, or participating in a youth exchange program, or preparing for college. While their paths will take them in many directions, each will carry with them the lessons of service and advocacy gained here.
A Growing Tradition
We are deeply proud of this year’s student volunteers and the strong program they represent. What began modestly has grown into an annual group of young leaders who not only help CLC fulfill its mission but also develop as future advocates for justice in whatever careers and communities they pursue. Their dedication reminds us that the next generation is ready to step up and lead with compassion, courage, and commitment. And for that, our community, and CLC, are stronger.
