Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month 2025
Each Year, April is a time to reaffirm one of our core beliefs: every child deserves to grow up safe, supported, and free from harm. Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month (CAAPM) gives us a chance to come together as a community, as a nation, and as humans to Stop the plague of child abuse. During the month, we partnered with community leaders, educators, caregivers, and advocates to shine a light on the importance of child protection and prevention.
The month began with a sea of blue on April 4 for Wear Blue Day, a National Day of Awareness to show solidarity with victims and survivors of child abuse. The very next day, on April 3, we participated in the Pinwheel Garden event, where we planted bright pinwheels – a symbol of the healthy and happy childhoods all kids deserve.
Local government leaders reinforce the need for safer communities. On April 10, Forsyth County officially recognized CAAPM with a proclamation, and on April 21, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines issued a city-wide proclamation in support of prevention efforts. These moments were more than ceremonial; they were public commitments to protecting children in our community.
Education and awareness are central to our efforts this month:
· As the World Health Organization highlights, 6 in 10 children under five are subjected to physical punishment or psychological violence at home. These numbers are heartbreaking but are also a call to action.
· To equip educators and advocates with tools for safety, we released "5 Ways to Help Students Feel Safe at School", providing actionable tips for building trust, emotional support, and a sense of belonging in classrooms.
· North Carolina law requires all individuals – regardless of profession – to report suspected child abuse or neglect. Knowing your role can be the first step in saving a child’s life.
· Positive Parenting Tips emphasize encouragement, patience, and open communication. All foundations that reduce stress at home lead to safer homes, and help children thrive.
Protecting children is a shared responsibility. Whether through policy, education, reporting, or parenting, we all have a role to play in preventing abuse before it starts.
To everyone who wore blue, shared a post, planted a pinwheel, or took a moment to learn more, thank you. Your support matters. It shows children that their safety is a community priority, not just a conversation for one month of the year.
As we move forward, Children’s Law Center remains committed to advocating for children and empowering adults in their lives. We are champions for children every day, every year for the last 20 years – and, with your support, we promise to continue doing so as ling as there are children in our community that need us.
